Kim Kardashian Turns Bar Exam Setback Into a Bold Energy Drink Campaign

Kim Kardashian is transforming one of the most public setbacks in her legal journey into a marketing opportunity for her energy drink brand, Update.

The reality television star and entrepreneur recently appeared in a humorous advertising campaign that directly references her unsuccessful attempt to pass the California bar exam. Rather than avoiding the subject, Kardashian placed it at the centre of the promotion, using self-aware humour to generate attention for the beverage brand.

The campaign begins with Kardashian taking part in a staged press conference. Reporters question how she manages her demanding schedule, multiple businesses and public appearances. Kardashian responds by suggesting that her energy is “different” before drinking from a can of Update.

The advertisement later shifts to an art-gallery setting, where Kardashian is displayed inside a glass case alongside study materials and the energy drink. Civil rights attorney Gloria Allred appears in the scene and questions whether Kardashian ever passed the bar examination.

Kardashian responds with the campaign’s central punchline: “I didn’t pass the bar. I raised it.”

Turning a Personal Disappointment Into Marketing

Kardashian took the California bar examination in July 2025 but revealed several months later that she had not passed.

According to the State Bar of California, 4,032 of the 7,362 applicants who completed the July 2025 General Bar Examination passed, resulting in an overall success rate of 54.8%. The pass rate among first-time candidates was significantly higher than that of repeat applicants.

Despite the result, Kardashian said she remained committed to becoming a lawyer. She described the examination result as disappointing but maintained that the setback had encouraged her to study harder and continue pursuing her legal ambitions.

Kardashian began following California’s law-office study route several years ago instead of attending a traditional law school. She passed the First-Year Law Students’ Examination, commonly called the “baby bar,” in 2021 after several unsuccessful attempts.

Her decision to openly discuss the latest failure has now become part of the promotional story surrounding Update.

Kardashian’s Role at Update

Kardashian joined Update as a co-founder in February 2026 as part of the energy drink company’s relaunch. The financial terms connected to her involvement were not publicly disclosed.

Update markets itself as an alternative to conventional energy drinks. According to the company, its beverages contain paraxanthine rather than caffeine and are made without sugar, calories, artificial flavours or artificial colours.

The brand’s campaign materials present Kardashian’s demanding lifestyle as an example of the type of sustained focus and energy the product aims to support. Update currently promotes several flavours, including berry, peach, mandarin, pineapple and grape.

The company’s performance and wellness claims remain part of its own marketing language, and individual responses to energy-related ingredients may differ.

A Self-Aware Celebrity Campaign

The advertisement stands out because Kardashian does not attempt to minimise or hide the bar exam result. Instead, she uses the public’s familiarity with her legal journey to create a memorable connection between the setback and the product.

The approach allows Kardashian to take control of a potentially negative story while presenting herself as resilient and capable of laughing at her own experience.

It also reflects a broader style of celebrity marketing in which personal experiences, online criticism and public controversies are incorporated directly into advertisements. By acknowledging what audiences already know, brands can create campaigns that feel more conversational and culturally relevant.

For Kardashian, the campaign connects three major parts of her public identity: entrepreneur, aspiring lawyer and global celebrity.

While passing the California bar remains an unfinished goal, the failed attempt has already found an unexpected commercial purpose. Through Update’s latest campaign, Kardashian has turned a professional disappointment into a headline-generating brand message—and once again demonstrated her ability to keep public attention focused on her next business move.
